Brookhaven College Health and Human Services Department Dean Recognized for Innovative Curriculum Design

MINNEAPOLIS , August 16, 2004 -- Capella University , an accredited online university headquartered in Minneapolis , and the League for Innovation in the Community College based in Phoenix , Arizona , announced today that Juanita Zapata Flint is the recipient of the university’s third League for Innovation Scholarship.

The League for Innovation Scholarship recognizes the innovative accomplishments of educators in community colleges across the country and awards three years of tuition in Capella University ’s Ph.D. program. The scholarship is valued at $50,000 and also includes residential colloquia.

Flint, dean of the Brookhaven College Department of Health and Human Services, was awarded the scholarship in recognition of her innovative ground-up design for a new Registered Nursing curriculum, the re-design of the Emergency Medicine Technician program, and for her more than 20 years of dedication to the education of nurses and emergency medical technicians in the Dallas Community College District in Texas .

When asked about receiving the award, Flint said, "My grandparents immigrated to Texas from Mexico . My father picked his way out of the cotton fields. They all taught me what I teach my students: ‘ Ed ucation is the key to better choices.’ I'm overwhelmed and grateful for this opportunity.” Flint began her career as a cardiovascular nurse and was recruited in 1976 to teach in the Dallas Community College District.

To fulfill her personal goal of becoming the vice president of instruction for Brookhaven College , Flint will pursue her Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership through Capella University ’s School of Education .

"This is very good news for our community and for the students who will benefit from her preparation in a fine program,” said Alice Villadsen, Brookhaven College president.
